Be a guide, not the answer sheet

It is natural to want to step in when a child is stuck. But confidence grows when learners are given enough room to think, try, and explain their own ideas. A helpful question can be more powerful than an immediate answer.

Try asking what they understand so far, what the question is asking them to do, or what they might try first. This keeps the learner in charge of the process while showing that support is nearby.

Create a calm conversation around learning

Conversations about schoolwork are most useful when they are not only about marks or unfinished tasks. Make space for a learner to talk about what feels easy, what feels confusing, and what has made them proud.

  • Praise effort, strategies, and persistence alongside results.
  • Agree on one achievable next step together.
  • Ask for help early when a difficulty keeps returning.
