Make space for their thinking

When a learner is stuck, it can be tempting to explain the answer immediately. Questions such as “What do you notice?” or “What could you try first?” give them a way back into the task.

The aim is not to leave them struggling. It is to show that their ideas are worth exploring and that help is available when they need it.

  • Ask what they already understand.
  • Invite them to explain their next step aloud.
  • End by naming one thing they did well.
